From Buckingham Palace to Village Pub

There are few more pleasurable experiences than a visit to one of our traditional village pubs, which these days offer so much more than a pint.

The 16th century White Horse Inn at Bridge, near Canterbury, is a great example, offering classic cosy traditional comfort after a country walk and also, with the greater demand these days for decent pub grub, a relaxing venue for family and friends to gather for a meal.

The new Landlord is Christian Diamant, a Kentish man who has brought a wealth of wide-ranging hospitality experience to the White Horse. The landlord and executive chef spent many years in Cornwall running a bistro; before that he worked various venues including several footman positions at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, serving at state visits and royal weddings.

On his return to Kent (he grew up near Faversham and went to school in Canterbury) he was Landlord of The Royal Naval Reserve pub in Whitstable, but when offered The White Horse Inn, Bridge, where he used to drink with his father as a youngster, he could not resist the opportunity. Now he’s enjoying a place at the heart of village life, alongside a team including a brilliant young chef, a front-of-house supremo who’s worked at The Ivy in London.

The White Horse is a classic half-timbered former coaching inn, formerly an important stopping place on the old A2 between London and Dover, and retains much of the old architecture including inglenook fireplaces.

Customers have a choice of seating areas: a spacious main bar with soft seating and a sofa next to an open fire ideal for cosy winter visits, a separate informal dining area, and a large well-planted garden with an outdoor bar and children’s play area which is a popular draw in summer.

The drinks list includes cask ales, wines, and fruit ciders, while the dinner, lunch and brunch menus offer seasonal ingredients produced locally where possible, with vegetarian and gluten-free options.

For regular village customers plus townies seeking a country pub outing, Christian and his experienced team are well-placed to please them all at any time of year.
